J-Sei Movie Night is dedicated to the wonderful and fascinating world of Japanese cinema, as well as Japanese American and AAPI films!

Join us on Friday, May 9, to watch and discuss the final film in Yamada Yōji‘s award-winning Samurai Trilogy: LOVE AND HONOR武士の一分 (2006) starring megastar Kimura Takuya (Blade of the Immortal; La Grande Maison Tokyo) and, in her big-screen debut, Dan Rei (Kābee; Vivant) as a low-ranking samurai and his wife whose quiet life together is tragically upended. Winner for Best Cinematography, Lighting, and Supporting Actor (Sasano Takashi) at the Japan Academy Awards, this is the last of Yamada’s films in the samurai genre, graced with the filmmaker’s steadfast sense of humanism, period detail, and scenes of natural beauty.

Join us on Friday, April 11, to watch and discuss the second film in the Samurai Trilogy by renowned director Yamada Yōji: THE HIDDEN BLADE隠し剣 鬼の爪 (2004) starring Nagase Masatoshi (Mystery Train; An) and Matsu Takako (Long Vacation; Hero) as a samurai and a household maid caught up in the waning years of the Tokugawa shogunate and on the verge of a new world. Winner for Best Art Direction at the Japan Academy Awards, this breathtaking movie is filled with period and location detail and characters that embody Yamada’s vision of the samurai genre.

Join us on Friday, March 14, to watch and discuss a classic samurai film of the 21st century: THE TWILIGHT SAMURAI / たそがれ清兵衛 (2002) by legendary director Yamada Yoji (known for the long-running Tora-san film series) and starring internationally renowned, award-winning actor Sanada Hiroyuki (Shogun) as “Twilight” Seibei, a low-ranking samurai striving to perform his duties while remaining devoted to his loved ones. Even if you’ve seen it before, watch it with us again; this movie, which swept the 2003 Japan Academy Awards, deserves multiple viewings.

Join us on Friday, February 14, for our annual Valentine’s movie night program focused on the mysteries of Japanese Love. We will watch and consider a rarely seen movie by one of the best filmmakers of Japan’s golden age: SUDDEN RAIN (Shuu), directed in 1956 by Naruse Mikio, about a marriage on the rocks, starring Sano Shūji and the legendary actress Hara Setsuko playing against type as a disgruntled wife. This should be a fun film to watch together, with lots to discuss afterward.

Join us for our next Japanese Movie Night program, when we will watch and discuss one of the best representatives of 1960s-era chambara: THREE OUTLAW SAMURAI (Sanbiki no samurai), directed by legendary action filmmaker Gosha Hideo. Gosha’s debut feature-length film was a prequel to his hit TV series, telling the origin story of how the three samurai met, amidst a dispute involving a magistrate and a group of poor farmers, with shifting alliances that will turn traditional notions of samurai loyalty and honor on its head.

 Salmon & Chicken Teri Bento ($18): Roasted salmon and chicken in homemade tare with roasted cabbage and koshihikari rice;
 Sabazushi ($34): Masaba from Japan pressed into a bozushi (boxed or pressed sushi) with ginger, negi and sweet kelp.
