Boro Inspired Collage with Sashiko Stitching
March 5 and 12, 1 to 3 pm
In this 2- day workshop we will create a 9×12” fabric collage for a crossbody bag. You will be introduced to other things you can make with same base size. As we are all different, each person will be encouraged to freely explore their individual style, preferences and methods. We will share ideas (and fabrics) with each other! Although we are not mending anything as is done in Boro, the method we will use is similar to patching with the use of simple Sashiko stitching.
In the spirit of Boro, you can repurpose what you may already have at home. Textile artist Chiyeko Klarman has personally cut up unwanted clothing, pulled out her fabric stash, dyed small pieces of white cloth with tea, coffee, onion skins. Friends and family are all great sources for fabric! The size of the project is approximately the same as a letter size printer paper so fabric pieces can be fairly small. For the body of the piece, Chiyeko recommends linen or medium weight cotton for easier stitching. More instructions will be provided to participants.
