J-Sei at the Movies
Friday, October 11, 6:30 pm (on Zoom)

J-Sei Movie Night is in its 7th year dedicated to the wonderful and fascinating world of Japanese cinema. It’s a fun way to learn about and discuss Japanese history and culture through the lens of international film and commentary.

For this Halloween month of October, we’ll watch a classic Japanese ghost film: KURONEKO (Black Cat) from 1968, directed by Shindō Kaneto and starring Nakamura Kichiemon, Otowa Nobuko, and Taichi Kiwako as a samurai and two vengeful spirits with a tragic connection. Based on a Japanese folktale and filmed in atmospheric high-contrast B&W with elements of eroticism, this movie is part of a long tradition depicting Japan’s fascination with the supernatural and is a forerunner of the modern J-horror movie genre. (Warning: This movie includes scenes of sexual assault and violence.)

Hope you can join us on Friday, October 11, at 6:30pm on Zoom. Send your RSVP to Jill (jill@j-sei.org) with “Oct movie night” in the subject line. We’ll send you Zoom info and reminders beforehand.
